Cracks in the Walls? Here's What Suffolk Homeowners Need to Know

Noticed a crack in your wall or ceiling? You’re not alone. Many homes across Suffolk - especially older or extended properties - develop cracks over time. But how do you know if it’s something cosmetic or a sign of a deeper structural problem?

Common Causes of Cracks in Suffolk Properties

Properties in Suffolk face a mix of soil types, weather patterns, and age-related wear that can all contribute to cracking. Common causes include:

  • Seasonal ground movement (particularly in clay-heavy areas)

  • Thermal expansion and contraction

  • Foundation settlement

  • Poorly executed extensions or renovations

  • Historic movement in older properties

While some cracks are harmless, others can indicate issues like subsidence or structural movement that need urgent attention.

When Should You Worry About a Crack?

You should consider a professional inspection if you notice:

  • Cracks wider than 5mm

  • New or worsening cracks over time

  • Diagonal cracks near doors or windows

  • Cracks that reappear after being filled

  • Bulging walls or uneven floors

These could point to structural movement that, if ignored, may lead to expensive repairs or even safety risks.
